Eating citrus fruits can be good for the body as these healthy acids reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke and some forms of cancer.

But does eating a lemon, limes or any other citrus fruit count as a ‘healthy’ snack?

As little as two tablespoons of lemon juice is enough to give you the same benefits as eating an entire 1.5l glass of water.

As little as two tablespoons of lemon juice is enough to give you the same benefits as eating an entire 1.5l glass of water.

Lemon also had lots of vitamins as a benefits it self.

These fatty acids can help to lower your cholesterol and blood pressure. A pint of limes has more vitamin C than an orange and twice the amount of vitamin A.

The yummy citrus fruits are also rich in vitamin A, B, C, E, K, calcium, potassium, iron, zinc, fibre and selenium.

Research has found that some citrus fruits have a beneficial effect on bone strength, which could help to prevent osteoporosis.

BUT WHY DOES IT REALLY HELP YOUR WEIGHT LOSS?

Dr Dariush Mozaffarian, dean of the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University, says: ‘Citrus fruits are high in fibre and vitamin C, which are great for weight loss, and their acidic flavour may help to suppress your appetite and reduce the amount of fat you’re eating.’

Nutritionist Catherine Collins explains why a lemon could help you to lose weight and the benefits give a flatter tummy

However, eating this sweet, sour and slightly bitter tasting fruit won’t help you to shed the pounds overnight – but it’s a healthy snack that has many important health benefits.

One of the best ways to lose weight and control your weight is to cut down on how much you eat. says Catherine Collins. ‘Limiting the intake of highly calorific foods such as carbs, sweet treats, biscuits, cakes and fizzy drinks.

Focusing on good-for-you foods such as fish and vegetables and beans can help control your weight,’ she says.

‘If you limit the amount of high-calorie food you eat, you can fill up on fewer calories.’

In addition to these amazing health benefits, eating a lemon also offers a few ways you can help to keep your weight down.

This can be done in a few ways. First, the acids in the fruit can lower your blood sugar levels and so reduce your need for insulin, says Catherine.

When you eat an apple, for example, the juice acts as a natural insulin substitute.

The same is true of the acids in citrus fruits, which can reduce the need for insulin or sugar (FAT) in the blood stream.

Secondly, the citric acid in lemons can help lower cholesterol, which in turn reduces the risk of heart disease.

Finally, the alkalising effect of the acid in lemon juice can help to boost the body’s levels of the ‘feel-good’ hormone, serotonin, which regulates mood, says Catherine.

WHY EAT A LEMON?

The green pigment, chlorogenic acid, in the peel of lemons has been shown to help to maintain kidney function and aid the function of the blood vessels that nourish them.

As well as increasing the amounts of magnesium, potassium and iron contained in the body, this wonderful citrus fruit is packed with folate, manganese, vitamin B6 and vitamin C.

If you are concerned about the levels of acid your kidneys are creating, citrus fruits can help to restore the acid-alkaline balance in the body. A serving of citrus fruits can improve the pH balance of the body and boost this natural detoxing process.

An experiment involving rats, published in the International Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, showed that eating citric acid supplements, rather than drinking lemon juice, resulted in more normal kidney function and lower blood pressure.

‘This is a great source of citric acid that can help to alkalise the body, improve blood flow, support the kidneys and nourish the liver,’ says Dr Mozaffarian.

‘Furthermore, eating citrus fruits may help to lower the levels of cholesterol in the blood, particularly if you are suffering from high blood cholesterol and have elevated blood pressure.’

HOW CAN A LEMON HELP YOUR WEIGHT LOSS?

A research study, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, showed that people who ate one fruit per day experienced a significant reduction in levels of body fat, triglyceride and total cholesterol, compared to those who consumed no citrus.

It’s not just the weight loss that can be linked to the citric acid contained in the fruit, though. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that diets rich in flavonoids, the phytochemicals found in citrus fruit, have a range of health benefits for reducing the risk of heart disease and diabetes.

Some of the phytochemicals, such as those found in citrus fruits, have anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer. Anti-oxidant properties that can help to control obesity, high blood pressure and high blood glucose.

‘This means that citrus fruits can help to strengthen the immune system and prevent disease.

particularly metabolic diseases like diabetes and heart disease’ says Catherine.

The phytochemicals found in citrus fruit act in a similar way to phytoestrogens, which are found in soya beans and other soya foods.

Because flavonoids have anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and anti-oxidant properties.

They can help to reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. In fact, a study published in the journal Nature Medicine, which looked at over 150,000 people.

Concluded that eating citrus fruits can reduce the risk of the three biggest killers. (heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes).

Even more incredibly, a study conducted by the Institute of Agricultural Economics in Japan, published in the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology. Showed that consuming lycopene, an antioxidant in tomatoes, can help to protect against cancer, liver damage and death from the flu.

And to top it off, a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition, which looked at more than 400,000 people.

Showed that eating the fruit has the added benefit of improving people’s heart health.

‘Because citrus fruits are so popular with the public, they could help you to lose weight by helping to lower the total amount of calories you are eating, while also boosting your levels of good fats. This in turn can help you to feel fuller for longer, so you eat less,’ says Catherine.

HOW CAN YOU ADD A LEMON TO YOUR DIET?

When it comes to weight loss, the average person needs to burn around 500 calories an hour just to stay at their normal weight.

Cutting out all of the extra fats in the diet will make it easier for you to burn up to 500 calories per hour.

A piece of citrus fruit contains between 1 and 3 calories per gram, so you can easily add two to three servings to your diet without having to struggle with weight loss.

A juice made from one lemon contains around 400 calories, so you would have to eat two to three to get the same amount of calories in a piece of fruit.

The question, then, is whether or not it is worth the calories.

Dr Adam Finn, a GP who specialises in weight loss, says the answer is an emphatic yes.

‘If you are after a weight loss diet, then the lemon can definitely make a big impact on your weight loss efforts, because it has a high water content.

‘The juice from a lemon contains around 400 calories, so you would have to eat two to three to get the same amount of calories in a piece of fruit

‘This means that the lemon is filling for someone who is on a diet.

‘This means that a lemon can be used in moderation and used as a snack in between meals.

‘However, if you are after a weight loss diet, the lemon will only help to burn off around 400 calories an hour as benefits.
