One of the best ways to lose weight and control your weight is to cut down on how much you eat. says Catherine Collins. ‘Limiting the intake of highly calorific foods such as carbs, sweet treats, biscuits, cakes and fizzy drinks.

Focusing on good-for-you foods such as fish and vegetables and beans can help control your weight,’ she says.

‘If you limit the amount of high-calorie food you eat, you can fill up on fewer calories.’

This can be done in a few ways. First, the acids in the fruit can lower your blood sugar levels and so reduce your need for insulin, says Catherine.

It’s not just the weight loss that can be linked to the citric acid contained in the fruit, though. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that diets rich in flavonoids, the phytochemicals found in citrus fruit, have a range of health benefits for reducing the risk of heart disease and diabetes.

When it comes to weight loss, the average person needs to burn around 500 calories an hour just to stay at their normal weight.

Cutting out all of the extra fats in the diet will make it easier for you to burn up to 500 calories per hour.

A piece of citrus fruit contains between 1 and 3 calories per gram, so you can easily add two to three servings to your diet without having to struggle with weight loss.

A juice made from one lemon contains around 400 calories, so you would have to eat two to three to get the same amount of calories in a piece of fruit.

The question, then, is whether or not it is worth the calories.

Dr Adam Finn, a GP who specialises in weight loss, says the answer is an emphatic yes.

‘If you are after a weight loss diet, then the lemon can definitely make a big impact on your weight loss efforts, because it has a high water content.

‘The juice from a lemon contains around 400 calories, so you would have to eat two to three to get the same amount of calories in a piece of fruit

‘This means that the lemon is filling for someone who is on a diet.

‘This means that a lemon can be used in moderation and used as a snack in between meals.

‘However, if you are after a weight loss diet, the lemon will only help to burn off around 400 calories an hour as benefits.
